Last Saturday’s festive event: thoughts and photos

Some highlights – and some visual memories – from last Saturday’s event on the Wood Street Plaza, which was part of the first national Small Business Saturday.

Hundreds of people of all ages and cultures – perhaps over a thousand in total – came along to enjoy the stalls, entertainment and free food and drink. Many called in from Wood Street and around, but some had come from as far afield as Broxbourne and Loughton. Apparently our event was the most popular of the eight running across the borough. Santa was so busy he had to call for some extra presents!

Festive event on 7 December in Wood Street

SnowflakePlans are afoot to hold a festive event in the Wood Street Plaza on the afternoon of 7 December. The programme is still being developed, and we will give more details here when they are available. But it is likely to include music, refreshments, stalls and quite possibly a guest appearance from a large bloke in a red and white outfit.

So put a note in your diary now:

Saturday 7 December, 2 – 7 pm (timings provisional)
Wood Street Plaza

The event is part of an initiative called ‘Supporting Small Businesses Saturday’ being taken forward by Waltham Forest Council, and follows on from this summer’s Love Your High Street events (one of which was held here in Wood Street). It is being organised by the same committee that pulled together that event. (Yes, that includes Graham Hodgkiss, who is not letting a small thing like having a serious accident and being assigned months of bed rest stop him from getting involved – and we are sure people will want to wish Graham a speedy recovery.)

What did you think of Wood Street’s Family Fun Day?

We won’t talk about the weather. Ok, we will just say “shame about the weather”, and move on. From my point of view (Tim here: I am on the organising committee, and am also one of the panel members of Wood Street First) the highlights were the amazing diversity of talents, skills and wares on display on the stages and the street stalls, and the great atmosphere (when the heavens allowed it). Also – wasn’t it wonderful to have the whole expanse of the street?
